Being professional means that the individual not only has the skill but also presents high-quality professionalism.

In today’s hyper-competitive environment, knowledge gets stale sooner than what you thought about due to rapid change and exponential growth of information. Top seasoned leaders or high professionals become aware when some of the long-acquired knowledge is no longer applicable in certain situations, they need to keep learning and build unique core competencies.

The critical step for discovering professional strength is to investigate what’s your strength, passion, innate talent: defining your tasks, things you want to do and do better than others, and make high achievements.

It’s imperative for leaders and professionals to build a unique set of professional competencies: Corporations should inspire people to grow and become who they want to be, being consistent in the habit of learning, to capture the lessons learned as you go along, together with the decision process that led you to make the choice you did since that provides context for acting, and problem-solving to build professional competency.

There are many skills people have to sharpen for building their professional competency. It’s about being productive to achieving setting goals; being insightful to make sound judgment, being learning-agile to build professional capabilities or unleash potentiality. To survive in the “VUCA” digital era, professional dynamism consists in being able to break away from being static, and becoming proactive to ever-evolving changes, to improve professional capability continually.

An individual’s learning agility is a fundamental capability block through which she or he can further build more advanced professional capabilities: Learning is the key to move forward, address any future potential challenges and issues with more confidence. The shift from the reactive learning mentality to proactive learning attitude enables individuals and organizations to look forward, improving their learning agility and building professional competency. Modern digital technologies bring unprecedented levels of convenience for people to learn and work, brainstorm and share, to improve their professional skills continually.

Learning is a constant process; the professional workforce today needs to become self-driven, and must have the attitude to keep learning, have learning aptitude and intelligence to learn fast and smart. That means they can learn from different channels, and transcend information to knowledge to insight and ultimate wisdom for professional maturity. It’s important to build a working environment in which different people can find their role in initiating empathetic communications, engaging in creative activities proactively; providing and giving feedback with mutual respect, and improving professional capability constantly.

It’s important to keep improving professional capability fluency, integrating existing capabilities to dynamic capability, and build the next level of core competency: Business professionals with linear competency are usually specialists who are good at doing a certain level of work using their set of specialized knowledge and expertise. To move up toward the next level of professional competency, business professionals need to keep learning, sharpening relevant skill sets, expand problem-solving capacity and build dynamic professional capabilities.

To move up professional capability to the highest level, there is influential competency with high impact. Business professionals constantly practice their abilities to solve complex problems, become domain experts or the master of a certain subject. At this level of professional competency, people are not only fluent in making professional achievement, but also becoming more influential on innovating, coaching, and driving transformative changes.

Being professional means that the individual not only has the skill but also presents high-quality professionalism. Professional development is a journey that is not a straight-line, more like a spiral up cycle that expands into the new horizon extensively, expanding capacity to solve more complex problems and integrating professional capabilities into core competence.
