Cross-boundary leaders are positive, energetic, creative, and influential to harmonize a holistic world.
Our co-shared world is complex, hyperconnected and interdependent, global leaders are specialized generalists with a unique set of global leadership competencies such as vision and communication, sound judgment, inclusiveness, multicultural intelligence, talent recognition and empowerment, cross-interdisciplinary knowledge & expertise, etc.
It is critical to understand what makes leaders effective with a global context, share a vision to bridge today and tomorrow: Compared to the industrial era with static information and overly restrictive boundaries in the last century, the information-based global society has the very characteristics of hyperdiversity, knowledge abundance, economic interdependence, culture enrichment, global leaders need to be able to facilitate and orchestrate these differences, values, beliefs, and cultures, have an ability to walk the talk to set principles and examples all the time.
Global leaders are willing to listen to diverse viewpoints, broaden the perspective to fix misperceptions, and capture fresh insight of quite many complex issues in order to solve either emerging or existing issues effectively. They are visionaries who are capable of predicting trends, managing the presence and delegating the past, and demonstrate an enriched leadership profile that advocates inclusiveness, innovativeness, and progression. They demonstrate high levels of cognitive intelligence to awaken possibilities in people with diverse talents for producing extraordinary results with consistency.
It is important to have the empathic communication skills to create synergy and lead the globe forward smoothly: Global leaders have to deal with opposing views, cultures, constraints, and competition. They bring fresh insight with cross-functional, cross-sector and cross-cultural perspectives; motivate and make people go where they have never been before, take the time to engage with people at every opportunity, and remind them of potential risks.
Global leaders should be very adaptable and have a high degree of “learning agility” as they manage people across functional, industrial and broad geographic boundaries. They are able to communicate and collaborate in a way that keeps people focused and connected in spite of the distances by building effective communication in networks of global conversations that inspire innovation in diverse domains of expertise.
It’s critical to assess the qualification of global leadership: The world becomes over-complex and hyperconnected, leadership effectiveness and qualities needs to be assessed within the context of the organization or the global society. How do they think; how do they lead, what’s their core leadership competence; how do they cultivate and integrate professional capabilities to achieve high performance; how do they contribute to their business’s long term success, and cultural evolution; how do they make continuous leadership impact; what’s their leadership potential – how do they learn & grow, etc.
The world-class leadership competencies include such as self-regulation, empathy, inclusiveness, motivation to work in a global environment, versatility to attract global talent in global innovation etc. Problem-solving at the global scope is a mindset with curiosity, inclusiveness, creativity, intellectual sophistication and cultural empathy. Global leaders can reinvent a highly collaborative and innovative global community in which people can leverage multifaceted global capital to deal with complex problems or issues in such a way that a solution emerges through a collaboratively interdisciplinary approach.
Leadership is complex and leading across cultures is more complex because there are many variables in it. Cross-boundary leaders are positive, energetic, creative, and influential to harmonize a holistic world. There is a delicate mix of multidimensional thinking, cross-domain expertise & experience, interpersonal skills, along with a lot of different attributes to improve world class leadership maturity.
